I just wished I lived closer so you could do some work on my bikes although you may be sick of 80's Schwinn road bikes 85 Traveler and 88 Le Tour. Anyways, I think those Alivio cranksets are still under warranty from Shimano.
There was a recall in due to failure. The rear derailleur cleaned and polished pretty good also but as I was wiping it down i felt something snap in my hand, it was the cable adjustment barrel. I want to drill the broken part out and user a donor barrel but I don't know if I can drill it out with out damaging the threads. I think I will have to start going through parts bins to find a donor derailleur. I installed the original for now to see how it looks.
Schwinn Years by Model
The front derailleur was on life support for a while but as made a miraculous recovery with letting the penetrating oil work, it function great. The rear derailleur did not make it, I donated a derailleur close to the same from my parts collection. The replacement derailleur polished nice and functions perfect. In the end the derialleurs came out good. Such a mid 's thing to do having the seat binder bolt in front!
I removed the hub components and the tires and got started. In the cleaning processes I started seeing some good results and continued on. The rust was mainly light surface rust on the outer most hub components the rest where great.
The rims where a little scary but I used a secret I found for cleaning very bad, very dried on grime and stains and they turned out fantastic! The hubs polished fantastic also but I did replace the bearings just in case.
The tires are old but I think there is a lot of life left in them, the gum walls are not perfect, if they end up being bad after the first rides David can choose new tires but for now it helps with the budget as with other replacement parts the budget has grown some.
All in all I could not be more thrilled with the results of the wheels!! They look great, are dead straight and the tire treads are hardly worn at all.
The rack is a nice rack and it fits perfect, the rack hardware was badly rusted so I replaced all the hardware. Removing the rusted nuts and bolts was a nightmare, I had to cut them off. In the end the new hardware looks great and will last a lot longer. With the rack complete the Schwinn Moab is complete. I took it for a test ride and it road fantastic, the shifting is perfect, the brake work great and it rides surprisingly smooth on the road. Of course the large knobby tires to make the usually knobby tire noise.
I am so happy with the results of the Schwinn Moab, I love the story behind it and I am very proud of the results considering where it started. The final photos look fantastic, although the lighting is interesting because I took them after this evenings storms. Very happy and proud!! Quick Update: The crank on the Schwinn Moab has a government recall on it, the recall is 18 years old but they will still honor it if David brings it to one of the bicycle shops that is covered for the work under the warranty, so that is nice.

Ignaz Schwinn was born in HardheimBadenGermany, in and worked on two-wheeled ancestors of the modern bicycle that appeared in 19th century Europe. Schwinn emigrated to the United States in Schwinn's new company coincided with a sudden bicycle craze in America.
Chicago became the center of the American bicycle industry, with thirty factories turning out thousands of bikes every day. Bicycle output in the United States grew to over a million units per year by the turn of the 20th century. The boom in bicycle sales was short-lived, saturating the market years before motor vehicles were common on American streets.
Many smaller companies were absorbed by larger firms or went bankrupt; in Chicago, only twelve bicycle makers remained in business. Competition became intense, both for parts suppliers and for contracts from the major department stores, which retailed the majority of bicycles produced in those days. Realizing he needed to grow the company, Ignaz Schwinn purchased several smaller bicycle firms, building a modern factory on Chicago's west side to mass-produce bicycles at lower cost.
He finalized a purchase of Excelsior Company inand in added the Henderson Company to form Excelsior-Henderson. In an atmosphere of general decline elsewhere in the industry, Schwinn's new motorcycle division thrived, and by was in third place behind Indian and Harley-Davidson. At the close of the s, the stock market crash decimated the American motorcycle industry, taking Excelsior-Henderson with it.
With no buyers, Excelsior-Henderson motorcycles were discontinued in Putting all company efforts towards bicycles, he succeeded in developing a low-cost model that brought Schwinn recognition as an innovative company, as well as a product that would continue to sell during the inevitable downturns in business cycles.
